Photo of the Day – 14 May 2016: Sailing By

This shot was taken at Kassiopi on the north coast of Corfu.  Now it is a popular tourist destination, but as a port in historical times it had greater significance and provided shelter for boats against Mediterranean storms.  The Venetians considered its defence sufficiently important that it required a substantial castle built atop the headland which is on the left of the shot.  Nowadays, there are some fishing boats and a few sailing yachts moored there, but no sign of much other activity.

Compositionally, I tried experimenting with the rule of thirds and golden ratio.  The shot seemed to work best when the sea was aligned with the lower horizontal third, the mast of the sailing boat with the right vertical third and the large tree on the left on the division created by the vertical golden ratio.  There is also some symmetry between the wall of the harbour and the Albanian cost beyond.

This is part of my occasional “Photo of the Day” series when I publish any shots which I think might be of interest and tell the story behind them.  They might not necessarily be portfolio standard images, nor the final version, but still be of sufficient interest for inclusion in my blog.  If I do not show a shot on any given day, it does not mean that I did not take any photographs, just that I did not get anything worthwhile.  For me, that is part of the fun of photography, not knowing what you will find on a shoot when nothing is planned.
