Photo of the Day – 1 November 2016: Burton Bradstock Beach

Posted on 19th November 2016 by Admin under Comment, Location, Photograph

Taken during a walk along the beach at Burton Bradstock.  If the cliffs look familiar, it might be because they are one end of a sandstone formation which terminates at West Bay.  That is the port town in Dorset which was the main location for the filming of the Broadchurch TV series.  At West Bay, the cliffs are a significant prescence and contribute to the character of the place.  The cliffs featured prominently in the TV show and are no doubt one of the reasons why West Bay was chosen.

The autumnal seaside light helps this shot.  At this time of the year the low angle of the sun results in a warm light which enhances the colours in the scene and brings out the textures.  Had this photo been taken in the middle of summer, the light would have been harsh and the image flat.  The quality of light in the autumn and winter months can make a real difference.  Provided the sun shines, of course.

This post is part of my occasional “Photo of the Day” series when I publish any shots which I think might be of interest and tell the story behind them.  They might not necessarily be portfolio standard images, nor the final version, but still be of sufficient interest for inclusion in my blog.  If I do not show a shot on any given day, it does not mean that I did not take any photographs, just that I did not get anything worthwhile.  For me, that is part of the fun of photography, not knowing what you will find on a shoot when nothing is planned.
